"AUSTRALIA'S citizenship rules should be tightened because some applicants speak English so badly that they have to be coached through their pledge of commitment, it is claimed.

Federal Liberal MP Sharman Stone, who holds the Shepparton-based seat of Murray, said people should have to live in Australia for at least five years before being eligible for citizenship, and take classes to learn their rights and responsibilities.

She said an overhaul was needed because the process had become 'too slack and too tokenistic', and many people only wanted citizenship so they could get an Australian passport."
